Tip #2

Hello all!  Sorry I missed yesterday.  It was CRAZY.  Here is tip #2!

Tip #2: Shutter Speed Overview

Shutter speed is how fast the camera records the picture.

If you are taking pictures of a 2 year old, you WILL need a faster shutter speed.  Turn your camera dial to S or TV if you have a canon.

Here are examples of fast and slow shutter speeds.

I was using a slow shutter speed.  I was wiggling my pointer finger.

I was using a fast shutter speed for this picture.  I was wiggling my pointer finger in this picture as well.

So, put your cameras on shutter speed and practice using fast and slow shutter speeds!

This is a VERY BASIC example of shutter speed.  There is so much more involved.  Next up ISO!  we are going out of town tomorrow, so the next tip will be on Monday!  Once again, if you are interested in a class that would go into more detail, email me @ sarah.k.thomas85@gmail.com.  I also thought about doing it a class through email and just meeting a few times for some hands on.  It might be hard to get busy mommies together at the same time. Let me know you thoughts!

Tip #1

Hey everyone!  Time to turn the dial off of automatic!  I am going to do 1 week of tips.  After that, I will evaluate and see if it might be worth doing a class or series of classes so that we can go more in depth.  I hope you find this helpful! The first two pictures were taken with my iphone.  The second two pictures were take with my Nikon D5000 with the kit 18-55mm lens.  I never use this lens, but since that is the lens most everyone has I decided to use it.

Tip #1: Turn your camera dial from automatic...

To program mode.

This will keep your flash from popping up.  If you MUST use a flash, you will have to turn it back to AUTO.  Now, you can also turn the dial one notch down.  That is auto mode without flash.  Program mode is better for outdoors.  The pictures I took below were taken on AUTO with flash and AUTO without.

With flash

Without flash
One reason to never shoot on AUTO.  The flash was just not needed.  The picture without the flash looks much better than the one with.

Obviously this is just a "tip".  I could go into MUCH more detail.  If any of you would be interested in a VERY BASIC class please email me!  sarah.k.thomas85@gmail.com  I think a class would be a lot of fun!
